Kumiko needle minder
Kawashima Joinery/Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture
MARIMO/Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture
``Kumiko Needle Minder'' is a traditional technique.
This is an elegant needle minder that takes advantage of the beauty of the traditional technique "Kumiko-zaiku", which has been passed down for over a thousand years in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture.
The biggest appeal lies in the skilled craftsmanship that does not use any metal fittings such as nails. Finely sawn pieces of wood are cut into pieces, and elaborate and beautiful geometric patterns are assembled only by hand.
The motif is the eight-pointed star (octagram), which incorporates the auspicious number ``eight'', which has long been used in Japan to mean ``spreading out''. It is a heartwarming design that is filled with positive wishes such as hope, development, and expansion into the future.
Available in three colorful colors: ``Kisuisen'', ``Rose Color'', and ``Water Asagi'', it gives off a quiet presence and beauty in your hand, even when you take a break from needlework.
Not only can it be used as your own daily craft tool, but it is also perfect as a gift for your loved ones as an auspicious item.
What is a needle minder?
A convenient tool to temporarily store your needle when embroidering or sewing. By simply holding the fabric with the included backing magnet, you can easily set it inside the embroidery hoop, which prevents the needle from getting lost, and allows you to smoothly place and pick up the needle while working.

■Kawashima fittings
Production area: Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture
Kumiko is a traditional Japanese technique with a history of more than a thousand years. It is a delicate technique that has been passed down as a decoration for fittings.
At Kawashima Tategu, we use free ideas that are not bound by frameworks to reconstruct Kumiko work into contemporary art-style furniture.
The beauty of a series of precise geometric patterns is similar to the "precision patterns" of Japanese art, and is highly regarded as a modern expression.
